Random Drug Testing for Those with CDLs Increases

The FMCSA recently announced an increase in the minimum annual percentage for random drug testing for drivers of commercial motor vehicles requiring a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Effective January 1, 2020, the rate increases from twenty-five percent (25%) to fifty percent (50%) of the average number of driver positions. There was no change to the minimum annual percentage rate for random alcohol testing.
The FMCSA’s announcement acknowledges that the change reflects the increased positive test rate and will result in approximately 2.1 million random drug tests in 2020 at an estimated $50 to $70 million increase in costs to the industry. The FMCSA estimated there are 3.2 million CDL holders operating in interstate commerce.
