Process
Before the Background Check is Run
Who is Asurint?
Asurint is a consumer reporting agency (CRA) that provides background screening reports — also known as consumer reports — to organizations when authorized by you, the consumer. Governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), we are committed to protecting your rights and privacy. These reports help employers, volunteer organizations, and property managers make informed decisions. Asurint is proudly accredited by the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA).
What information does Asurint collect to run my background check?
The information we collect depends on the type of background check requested. Typically, we require your legal name, date of birth, current address, and Social Security number (or another government ID, depending on the country). This helps ensure accurate results and that the report is completed for the correct individual. If employment or education verification is included, we may also collect relevant details such as employer name and contact information, or school name, degree earned, and graduation date.
Why does Asurint need my Social Security Number (SSN)?
Your SSN helps us run an SSN trace to identify your address history, which guides searches to the correct jurisdictions. It also helps distinguish your records from those of individuals with similar names, improving accuracy. While not all court records include SSNs, this step enhances the reliability of your report.
Is my Information secure?
Yes. Asurint follows strict data protection protocols to ensure your personal information is handled securely and used only for its intended, authorized purpose. We’ve implemented robust security policies and procedures that reflect our commitment to protecting your data. All connections to our portal are encrypted, and our website supports the latest encryption standards used by modern web browsers. To learn more, we encourage you to review our Privacy Policy for details on how we safeguard your information.
During Background Process
How long will my background check take?
Turnaround times depend on the types and number of searches requested by the organization. Delays can occur due to court closures, severe weather, or unresponsive employers or schools. On average, Asurint completes most background checks within 24–48 hours.
What does a background check include?
Each background check is customized based on the organization’s requirements and may vary by role or industry. For example, transportation roles may require a driving record and Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance, while healthcare roles may include license verification. Most checks include a criminal record search and may also involve education and employment verifications, professional references, and drug testing.
How far back does a background check go?
The reporting period depends on the data source and applicable laws. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows reporting of criminal convictions without a time limit but restricts non-conviction information to seven years. Some states further limit reporting timeframes or prohibit the inclusion of pending or non-conviction records. Employers may also choose to restrict how far back their searches go. For details about your specific background check, contact the organization requesting it.
Important Communications
I received a “613 letter.” What does that mean?
A 613 letter is a notice sent by Asurint when public record information is first reported on your background check. If you believe the information is incorrect, please contact our Compliance team at compliance@asurint.com or 1-800-906-2034.
Does my employer need to share my background check results with me?
Yes. If an employer or volunteer organization is considering taking adverse action based on your background check, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires them to provide a pre-adverse action notice, a copy of the report, and a Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act before making a final decision. The notice will include a waiting period, giving you time to review and dispute any inaccuracies. If the decision is finalized, you’ll receive a final adverse action notice. While Asurint may send these letters on behalf of the employer or volunteer organization, we are not involved in hiring or decision-making.
Compliance-Related Inquiries
What should I do if I think something in my background report is wrong?
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you have the right to dispute any information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete in your background report. Once a dispute is filed, Asurint will conduct a reinvestigation at no cost to you, and your prospective organization will be notified.
You can file a dispute through any of the following methods:
· Website
· Phone: 1.800.906.2034
· Fax: 216.916.4190
· Email: compliance@asurint.com
· Mail: Asurint, P.O. Box 14730, Cleveland, OH 44114
There’s no form required to initiate a dispute, but providing your full name, order ID, the organization that ordered your background report, and a brief description of the issue will help us resolve it faster. You may also submit supporting documentation (e.g., court records, expungement orders), though this is not required. All documentation will be considered during the review.
How long will the reinvestigation process take?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows up to 30 days to complete a reinvestigation, but many disputes are resolved within 1–5 business days. Once complete, your prospective organization is notified, and you’ll receive a copy of the updated report along with a reinvestigation outcome letter by mail or email, based on your preference.
Why didn’t my criminal record show up on the background check?
Asurint reports records in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) as well as applicable state and local laws. Certain records — such as arrests or dismissed cases older than seven years — may not be legally reportable. A record may also be excluded if it wasn’t found in the jurisdictions searched or was removed based on the client’s reporting requirements.
How do I request a free copy of my background report?
If Asurint has prepared a consumer report (i.e., a background report) on you, you’re entitled to a free copy. To request it, contact our Compliance team via any of the following methods:
· Website
· Phone: 1-800-906-2034

· Mail: Asurint, P.O. Box 14730, Cleveland, OH 44114
To verify your identity, you may be asked to confirm details such as your date of birth and preferred delivery method.
